Film, Emotion, and Neuroscience
May 2013 13

Kubrick, Scorsese, Lynch, Hitchcock. These iconic filmmakers exhibit mastery of combining images and sound to heighten suspense and drama. Session 4 of “Feel the Music,” a forum on music and emotions, analyzes different styles of filmmaking and the way various techniques change a viewer’s experience—even the brain’s response, as seen with fMRI. Could this provide a quantitative way of testing the success of a film and lead to an interdisciplinary field of cognitive neuroscience and film studies, called “neurocinematics”? The session ends with a workshop on Hitchcock’s emotion-building techniques.

At 3:30 pm Workshop about “How Hitchcock Bilds Emotion” leb by Patrizia Lombardo, Uri Hasson, Kent Long and Steffen Schmidt

Date:
17 May 2013 from 1:15 PM to 4:00 PM

Location:
730 Montgomery St. San Francisco, CA 94111.

After a number of years in operation it is time to reflect, consolidate and give the artists-in-labs program a new direction. Therefore the Swiss artists-in-labs residencies will be suspended in 2012.

We will take this time to further develop the concept of the residencies and remain committed to give artists the opportunity to collaborate with scientists and people from different disciplines and cultures. We are dedicated to further the discourse about trans-disciplinary research through thematic conferences, exhibitions and publications, which explore pertinent relevant themes in a larger social context.
Swiss artists-in-labs will continue to work across Switzerland and on an international level and will seek new ways to reach out to local communities, open up scientists to the potentials of the art-processes and creative interpretation and engage diverse audiences with our explorations and activities.

The results of our reflections as well as future opportunities for both artists and scientists will be posted on this site and with a newsletter in due course. Please check our progress and keep in touch for opportunities and trans-disciplinary information.

We’re happy to announce the opening of our group exhibition Think Art – Act Science in the Walter and McBean Galleries at the San Fancisco Art Institute on September 21st at 5pm with a sound performance by Alexandre Joly.

The exhibition in San Francisco is a cooperation between the Swiss artists-in-labs program, swissnex San Francisco, the San Francisco Art Institute (SFAI) and the Bay Area Science Festival.

Featured Artists:

Monika Codourey | Christian Gonzenbach | Alexandre Joly | Roman Keller | Pe Lang | Wenfeng Liao | Alina Mnatsakanian | Nicole Ottiger

Think Art – Act Science exhibits works and collaborative processes from artists who have engaged in long-term creative dialogues with scientists. During an immersive nine-month residency in a scientific research institute the artists were exposed to the discourses within the scientific community and gained deep insights into the methodologies and processes of scientific research. From a total of twenty-four artists who have participated in the Swiss artists-in-labs program since 2007 and created works so far, eight will be on display in San Francisco. Since two of these artists took part in a Sino-Swiss residency exchange 2009 between Switzerland and China, the exhibition not only tries to build a bridge between different cultures of knowledge, but moreover points towards promising exchanges between art and science on a global scale.

For the duration of the exhibition a surrounding program includes a variety of participative formats such as workshops (student and public), conferences, performances and lectures. Additionally, both SFAI and swissnex San Francisco sites will host such events as part of the Bay Area Science Festival, which runs from 26 October – 6 November 2011.

Didactica – Art and Science on Stage – Jazz Festival Montreux
Jun 2012 14

Didactica, Art and  Science on Stage, saturday 7th 2012 at the petit palais

The poetry of sleep (EN) at 4pm

Audio-visual performance by Sandra Huber, artist in residence at UNIL and CHUV (Swiss artist-in-labs program/ZHdK)

Stemming from a nine-month collaboration with scientists who study sleep in Lausanne, a long poem has been sculpted onto the brainwaves of a sleeping subject (the artist) in order to reconsider themes of consciousness and language. The polyphonic “reading” attempts to sound out the electricity of the brain in sleep.

Coeur et sons – paysage sonore II (FR) at 5pm

Artist in residence at the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery at the CHUV, Steffen Schmidt creates soundscapes by using heartbeats and the environment of the hospital. Studying the relations and the differences between medicine and music /sound art, as well as the different modes of perception between scientific super – specialization and aesthetic perspective might lead to new results in both science and art.

Neuromedia – Art and Neuroscience research
Aug 2012 08

Sounds of Science – Pe Lang at the ZERO1 Art and Technology Biennial exhibition
Sep 2012 12

Sound of Science
Artist=researcher?
In conjunction with the ZERO1 Biennial, Swiss artist Pe Lang and US artist Charles Lindsay perform their liaisons to science.

18 September 2012 from 6:30 pm to 10:00 pm in Seeking Silicon Valley

Featured Artists: Pe Lang / Charles Lindsay

Artists, researchers, and engineers are all driven by an innate curiosity to explore, experiment, and play. By sharing tools, processes, and methods with each other, they can amplify their unique perspectives.

Pe Lang, an Artist in Residence at the Exploratorium, creates kinetic objects to demonstrate physical and mechanical phenomena, material research, and their sound components. Charles Lindsay is intrigued by our rapid ascent from early primates to astronauts and curious about the role technological evolution plays in all aspects of metacognition and consciousness. Devices increasingly ‘see’ and ‘think’ for us. What does life on earth suggest about what intelligent life might look or sound like elsewhere in the universe?

In conjunction with the ZERO1 Art and Technology Biennial exhibition, where Pe Lang presents two installations, swissnex is hosting the two artists to speak about their artistic processes and perform their “research.”

Pe Lang will perform “cl_loop” using magnets as sound sources with different frequencies and two handmade devices, one that functions as a sensor and one as an electromagnet. Just by moving the magnets, the artist “composes” the sounds created by introducing different materials that alter the magnet’s acoustic qualities.
